We Analyzed 1,320 AI Prompts: 4 Findings
TL;DR: a full-corpus analysis of PromptCraft's 1,320 field-tested prompts shows advanced prompts average 1,562 characters — 4.1× longer than beginner ones (380); image generation accounts for 53% of all demand, 81% of it targeting ChatGPT image generation (GPT Image); and video prompts are, counter-intuitively, the shortest of all (381 characters on average).

Finding 1: good prompts are written structure, not one-liners
Average length by difficulty: beginner 380 characters, intermediate 547, advanced 1,562 — a 4.1× gap. The difference is not padding: advanced prompts encode role setup, constraints, output format, examples and self-check rules. One-line prompts work for simple tasks, but nearly every reusable production-grade prompt is long-form.
Finding 2: image generation dominates — and concentrates in ChatGPT
Distribution across the four media: image 699 prompts (53%), video 385 (29%), chat & workflows 183 (14%), music 53 (4%). Within the image category, 563 prompts (81%) target GPT Image (ChatGPT's image generation) — a signal that by 2026, mainstream image generation has consolidated into the ChatGPT interface.
Finding 3: video prompts are shortest, workflow prompts longest
Average length by medium: chat/workflow 1,226 characters > image 1,019 > music 702 > video 381. Video models (Sora, Veo, Kling) want one precise shot description — framing, camera move, subject action; workflow prompts (system prompts, agent instructions) are essentially spec documents, and the more complete the more stable. The "ideal length" differs completely per medium — porting an image-style prompt to video usually backfires.
Finding 4: free vs. paid split
604 of 1,320 prompts (45.8%) are fully free including full text. Difficulty split: intermediate 553 (42%), advanced 446 (34%), beginner 321 (24%) — the corpus centers on "works out of the box, with room to tune".

Method: full-corpus SQL aggregation (COUNT / AVG(LENGTH)) over all published prompts; "characters" include whitespace. The corpus is original curation, so distributions reflect the demand profile of Traditional Chinese users, not whole-web proportions.
